Love Your Pet Day

This Tuesday February 20th is Love Your Pet Day.

If you’re reading this, I’m guessing you are thinking to yourself, every day at your house is Love Your Pet Day. Am I right? I know I am. I would bet money that most everyone reading this had that thought.

Every day at our house is Love Your Pet Day but what can you do to make your dog’s day? What really makes your dog happy? Whatever that is, do that with your dog.

This day is all about giving your pet extra attention on this day. Giving him your undivided attention.

Here are 5 things you can do to make the day extra special for your pet:

  1. Take him for a walk. If you already walk your dog daily, then make the walk a little longer. Stay off your phone while you’re walking him. Give him your attention.

  2. Play with him in the yard. Does he like to chase the ball or catch a frisbee? Spend some time doing this for him.

  3. Is yours a couch potato and his entire world revolves around you? Then sit with him and love on him. Not the obnoxious, give him hugs and kisses attention that he may or may not actually like but rub his ears, rub his belly. Give him some extra attention and show him how much he’s loved.

  4. Does he like car rides? Take him on an adventure that doesn’t involve going to the vet.

  5. Want to make another dog’s day? Go to your local shelter and volunteer. Make this day special for another dog. If you REALLY want to step up this idea, ADOPT a shelter pet. (But only if you’ve given this some thought and consideration.)

Our dogs get multiple walks every day. They both really enjoy them.

We have a dog park in our community. I’ll take Jeff there today and I’ll throw the ball for him. We bought him a frisbee. He’s never caught it. Maybe he will on his special day. I don’t take him to the dog park every day so I’ll do this for him today. (As an aside, I am not a fan of dog parks. We live in a very small community and I only take my dogs to the dog park when no one else is there. We are still working on appropriate dog manners with Jeff.)

This is our Molly. She’s 10 now and we adopted her when she was 4. She doesn’t love modeling so I don’t photograph her often.

And the other reason I don’t like to take him to dog park is because several of my neighbors use the park as their dog’s personal pooping grounds and they don’t pick it up. Don’t get me started…. my blood pressure is rising even typing this. I just don’t understand some people. It’s selfish and lazy.

I’ll take Molly on a walk by herself. When I walk them together, I am always more focused on Jeff because we are still working on his leash manners so I know Molly would enjoy a walk by herself. At 10 years old, she has slowed down some but she still loves going on multiple walks per day.
