Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival 2021
I am so excited to be “On Tour” with my friend Audrey of Sunsets Unleashed in Oregon at the Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival.
Audrey and I met in exactly 5 years ago this week in 2016 at an “out of this world pet photography workshop” called Barkelona. We have become great friends through our love of dogs, photography and travel.
We came up with the idea of BARKography On Tour and Sunsets Unleashed On Tour on a flight to Vancouver in 2018. We decided to choose cities we love and book dog photography sessions while we are there.
We had grand travel plans in 2020 but all of them were canceled because of covid. This is our first trip together since 2019 and I think we appreciate this trip that much more because of not being able to travel for the last year.
Audrey splits her time between San Diego and Oregon and when she told me about an Oregon tulip festival that allows dogs to be photographed in the fields, I was all in.
The Wooden Shoe Farm is located in Woodburn OR about 40 minutes south of Portland. They hold the tulip festival every spring and this is my first time here.
The tulips are planted in October and typically bloom for about 8 weeks from late March - May. The flowers are planted in rows so there actually is space between the rows but depending on the angle when I’m taking a photo, I can make it appear as though there aren’t rows and the dog is in a sea of tulips.
This is rescued, older guy Rocky posing like a rockstar in the tulips. We met him and his mom for an early morning sunrise photo shoot. It was chilly so this older gentleman had on his best sweater (that his mom actually sewed for him.)

I am still totally shocked that dogs are allowed in the fields. Dog are supposed to be on leash but really well behaved trained dogs can be posed without someone holding onto the leash.
Rusty was really well behaved so his mom was able to unclasp his leash for our photos.
If you want to see more photos of dogs in the tulip fields, follow me on Instagram.
I’ll be posting an Irish Wolfhound that we photographed on our last night (I am resisting typing that in all caps!) He was the first wolfhound I’ve ever met in person.
We also photographed two pumis. I’d never even heard of the breed…. they are adorable white poodle-ish type dogs with adorable ears. We photographed 5-6 other dogs and I’ll be posting them all on my instagram.
If you’re fortunate enough to have seen tulip fields in person, you know what I experienced. This has been AMAZING!
PS A few clouds would’ve been nice…. other than this first sunrise session, we had blue skies and bright sunshine the entire time. It usually rains in Oregon this time of year. I actually bought mud boots and shipped them to Audrey. So far I have not put them on once. LOL
This is a blog circle and our topic this week is colorful. I typically don’t blog while I’m traveling but when the topic is “colorful” and I’ve been photographing dogs for 3 days in tulip fields, I am definitely going to participate.
Up next is Jo Lyons Photography, Barrington Coast Dog and Animal Photographer. Be sure to click the link at the end of each post and once you’ve made your way around the circle, you’ll end up back here.
